The Quality Work at the Norwegian Institute for Children’s Books meets Requirements, but not at Skrivekunstakademiet

The quality work at the Norwegian Institute for Children’s Books (NBI) is now satisfactory, while it remains unsatisfactory at Skrivekunstakademiet (SKA).

The NOKUT board has reviewed two supervision cases following the identification of deficiencies in quality work. In May 2024, both institutions received decisions noting certain deficiencies and were given an eight-month deadline to submit documentation of improvements. NOKUT has now made final decisions in the cases, in line with the assessments of the expert committee.

“We are pleased that the Norwegian Institute for Children’s Books has addressed the deficiencies and now has satisfactory quality work. As for Skrivekunstakademiet, it is unfortunate that not all deficiencies have been addressed. We expect the institution to take the necessary steps going forward to ensure that its quality work meets the required standards,” says NOKUT Director Kristin Vinje.

Norwegian Institute for Children’s Books Has Satisfactory Quality Work

The Norwegian Institute for Children’s Books has corrected the deficiencies identified in 2024. The committee commends the institute for thorough and well-executed improvements. NBI conducted both a periodic evaluation and systematic review of the accreditation requirements for its study programs during the autumn of 2024.

“The Norwegian Institute for Children’s Books has made a solid effort in a short time. The institute has worked purposefully and systematically to correct the deficiencies in its quality work,” says Kristin Vinje.

About the Norwegian Institute for Children’s Books

The Norwegian Institute for Children’s Books is a private foundation established in 1979 with the aim of being a national research, education, and dissemination institute for children’s and young adult literature. The institute offers a 60-credit author education in creative writing and literature dissemination, a 30-credit continuing education in contemporary literature for children and youth, and a 120-credit master’s degree in creative writing and dissemination for children and youth.

Skrivekunstakademiet Does Not Have Satisfactory Quality Work

Skrivekunstakademiet has not corrected all the deficiencies identified in 2024. The committee views it as serious that the institution has not documented the correction of all deficiencies, especially regarding the requirements for systematic review of accreditation standards for study programs. The committee emphasizes that even small institutions must have systems and quality work that comply with regulatory requirements.

SKA was established in 1985 and is located in Bergen. The institution offers an accredited one-year program in creative writing and a non-accredited advanced course in writing arts.

The decision that the quality work at SKA is not satisfactory is NOKUT’s final decision in the case. SKA may request NOKUT to conduct a new supervision one year after the final decision. As long as the quality work at SKA is not approved by NOKUT, NOKUT may impose a moratorium on applications for accreditation of new study programs and for accreditation as a university college.
