What does Brexit mean for NOKUT’s recognition schemes?

The departure of the United Kingdom from the EU took place on 31 January 2020. NOKUT has several recognition schemes, and Brexit will only have legal ramifications for applicants applying for recognition of teacher qualifications from the UK.

Transition period

The withdrawal agreement came into effect on 1 February 2020. It includes a transition period that will last until 31 December 2020. The EU/EEA rules and regulations will remain the same as before for British citizens throughout this period. In the meantime, the UK and Norway will negotiate their future relationship.

Recognition of teacher qualifications – school and kindergarten

The EU Directive on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications will continue to apply for applicants with qualifications from the UK during the transition period. As a result, professionals who wish to apply for recognition in Norway will not experience any changes that might affect the decision process until 31 December 2020.

It is not yet certain what will happen when the transition period expires, and we will update our website when new information becomes available.

NOKUT’s recognition of foreign higher education, tertiary vocational education and vocational education and training

Brexit will not affect NOKUT’s recognition schemes on foreign education.
