Organizational structure

NOKUT is a professionally independent government agency under the Ministry of Education and Research, and its Board has ultimate responsibility for its decisions.

NOKUT is headed by its Director General, Terje Mørland, and is organized into three departments. In addition there is a joint administrative support department and a department for communications. NOKUT has approx. 75 employees, and each year contracts 200–300 experts for various evaluation and accreditation processes.

NOKUT's operations cover three main areas:

  • External quality assurance of higher education and tertiary vocational education
  • Developing quality though research, evaluations and analysis
  • Recognition of foreign higher education qualifications

Each area is the responsibility of a separate department. When it comes to recognition of foreign education, there is also a national information centre, INVIA, that provides information about the Norwegian authorisation and recognition systems. INVIA is intended to function as a gateway for everyone seeking recognition of international education and/or professional experience.
