If you wish to apply for admission to Norwegian higher education, you do not need to apply to NOKUT for recognition of your foreign higher education first.
Admission to higher education
Admission to higher education in Norway is governed by the Regulations on higher education entrance qualification (Generell Studiekompetanse, hereafter referred to as GSK):
- To be admitted to first cycle studies at a Norwegian university or university college, the requirement is normally a completed education corresponding to GSK.
- For applicants with foreign education to obtain GSK, education at a level equal to that of Norwegian Upper Secondary school (“videregående skole”), and documented proficiency in English and Norwegian is required.
- Some programmes have specific admission requirements beyond the requirement for GSK.
- The Universities and Colleges Admission Service processes applications for admission to first cycle studies.
- The educational institutions process applications for admission to second cycle (master’s degree) studies.
Credit transfer (from your foreign higher education to a Norwegian higher education study programme)
If you have higher education from another country and you wish to continue your studies in Norway you may be granted a credit transfer from your previous studies towards a study programme at a Norwegian higher education institution. You can apply for a credit transfer directly to the institution in question.
Recognition with this purpose requires extensive documentation.
