NOKUT is headed by its Director General, Terje Mørland, and is organized into three departments. In addition there is a joint administrative support department and a department for communications. NOKUT has approx. 75 employees, and each year contracts 200–300 experts for various evaluation and accreditation processes.
NOKUT's operations cover three main areas:
- External quality assurance of higher education and tertiary vocational education
- Developing quality though research, evaluations and analysis
- Recognition of foreign higher education qualifications
Each area is the responsibility of a separate department. When it comes to recognition of foreign education, there is also a national information centre, INVIA, that provides information about the Norwegian authorisation and recognition systems. INVIA is intended to function as a gateway for everyone seeking recognition of international education and/or professional experience.
